Housing & Buildings Manager - Women's Refuge

Help us maintain safe, secure spaces for women and families rebuilding their lives.

The Pankhurst Trust brings together Manchester Women’s Aid and the Pankhurst Centre. We work together to ensure the story of the women who won the vote continues to inspire us all, and to ensure that those suffering from domestic violence and abuse get the confidential help they need. We are a group of female champions, empowering women across Manchester and beyond.

Our refuge accommodation provides safety and stability, and allows women and families affected by domestic abuse to rebuild their lives, free from abuse.

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Housing & Buildings Manager to make sure our refuge and accommodation buildings are safe, compliant, well maintained and fit for purpose. This is a role for someone who understands that strong systems, good maintenance and clear housing processes are not just operational tasks – they are essential to delivering high quality, trauma-informed support.

If you are practical, organised, solutions-focused and committed to social impact, we would love to hear from you.

Why join us?

Working for PTMWA is genuinely meaningful. You will be part of an organisation rooted in feminist values, committed to creating inclusive, empowering environments for both service users and staff. In return for your skills, experience and commitment, we offer:

  • A genuine commitment to flexible working and a strong focus on staff wellbeing
  • 25 days’ annual leave, rising to 30 days with service, plus bank holidays
  • The option to purchase additional annual leave
  • Enhanced sick pay
  • Time off to take part in volunteering activities
  • Highly competitive family leave and pay, including 21 weeks’ maternity pay and paid time off for fertility treatment
  • Above statutory pension contributions
  • An Employee Assistance Programme and access to external 1:1 wellbeing support when needed

About the role

As our Housing & Buildings Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the safe and effective management of our refuge and accommodation buildings across Manchester. You will work closely with refuge managers, landlords, contractors and service teams to keep accommodation running smoothly and to continuously improve what we do.

This includes:

  • Making sure our buildings are safe, compliant and well maintained
  • Overseeing maintenance, repairs and contractor relationships
  • Making sure health and safety systems are up to date
  • Managing voids and property turnaround so spaces are brought back into use quickly
  • Overseeing housing and finance support processes

What we're looking for

  • Practical experience of building or accommodation management in residential, supported housing or similar environments, including working with contractors and external providers
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Good professional judgement in identifying and responding to building and safety risks
  • Confidence using digital systems to track and report property and housing activity
  • The ability to communicate clearly with contractors, landlords and service teams

The role involves regular travel between sites across Manchester, sometimes at short notice and occasionally outside normal working hours to respond to urgent property or safety issues. A full driving licence is normally required.

We actively encourage applications from all sections of the community, particularly under-represented groups, as we try and reflect the neighbourhoods in which we work. This is a fabulous opportunity to work with some wonderful teams and truly inspiring women, and as such, please note that this role has been assessed and confirmed as open to women only under the Equality Act 2010, schedule 9, part 1. It is also important to note that we suppport, in some circumstances, the principle of providing single sex services which are lawful under the Equality Act 2010. PTMWA will treat trans/non-binary people according to the gender identity in which they present themselves, but will also maintain and promote the need for single-sex services in some settings.

If you require any of our recruitment material in alternative formats or require support with the application process, please contact hrsupport@pankhursttrust.org.
